Meet the Royals: Navigating PRINCE2® Editions 6 and 7
Brief Overview of PRINCE2 6th Edition Methodology
PRINCE2 6th Edition is a globally recognized project management methodology that emphasizes a process-driven approach. It is structured around seven principles, seven themes, and seven processes that guide project managers through every stage of a project. The methodology is highly flexible and can be tailored to suit the specific needs and complexities of any project, ensuring that objectives are met within defined constraints.
The core elements include principles like "continued business justification" and "learn from experience," along with themes such as Business Case and Quality. These provide a comprehensive framework for effective project management, focusing on delivering value to the organization while ensuring rigorous risk assessment and quality control.
Brief Overview of the PRINCE2 7 Methodology
The PRINCE2 7 builds upon the foundational elements of its predecessor while introducing new dimensions to adapt to evolving project management needs. It retains the core structure of seven principles, themes, and processes but adds an eighth performance target—Sustainability. The methodology now places a greater emphasis on the "people" aspect of project management, recognizing that the success of a project is highly dependent on the capabilities of the project team.
In PRINCE2 7, the themes have been renamed as "practices," and a new focus has been given to "Change Management," which is now part of the project initiation documentation. The methodology also introduces a five-step organizational design and development technique, providing a more holistic approach to project management.
Edition 6 vs Edition 7—What You Need to Know
Both PRINCE2 6th and 7th Editions offer robust frameworks for project management, grounded in principles, themes (or practices in the 7th Edition), and processes. While the 6th Edition focuses on traditional elements like Business Case, Risk, and Quality, the 7th Edition introduces new components like Sustainability and a greater emphasis on people and change management. However, it's important to note that the 6th Edition remains highly relevant and will continue to be recognized for a long time.
The overarching similarities between the two versions lie in their structured, process-driven approaches and their adaptability to various project types and complexities. The differences mainly pertain to the additional elements introduced in the 7th Edition to address the evolving landscape of project management. Regardless of the edition chosen, both provide comprehensive guidelines for achieving project success, making either version a valuable asset for aspiring and experienced project managers alike.
Navigating PRINCE2 Certification:
Your Roadmap to SuccessPRINCE2 offers two primary levels of certification: Foundation and Practitioner. The Foundation level serves as your gateway into the world of PRINCE2, focusing on its core principles, themes, and terminology. This level aims to equip you with the foundational knowledge required to be an informed member of a project management team in a PRINCE2 environment. The Foundation exam is a 60-minute closed-book test consisting of 60 questions, with a passing score of 55% (60% for PRINCE2 7).
The Practitioner level is your next step, designed for those who wish to apply and tailor the PRINCE2 methodology in a project environment. This certification level dives deeper into the practical application of PRINCE2 principles, themes, and processes. The Practitioner exam is a 150-minute open-book test with 68 questions, also requiring a 55% pass mark (60% for PRINCE2 7). To sit for the Practitioner exam, you must first pass the Foundation exam or hold other recognized project management certifications like PMP or CAPM.
Both levels offer flexibility in how you take the exams: through an accredited training provider, online, or at a public examination centre. Regardless of the method you choose, the exam structure remains consistent. Earning these certifications not only validates your expertise in PRINCE2 but also provides you with PDUs (Professional Development Units), beneficial for maintaining other project management credentials.
